Robert Carl's New String Quartet to Receive Icelandic World Premiere
Robert Carls String Quartet No.3, Spatial/temporal, Abstract/Visceral, Transcendent/Humane will be premiered on September 24, 2023 at 4 PM in the HARPA Nordlujs Hall, Reykjavik, Iceland. The performers are QuartetES, an international ensemble based in both the US and Iceland. The work was written for the group, and completed during the pandemic. The composer writes:
My third string quartet consists of two substantial movements, encasing a brief and mysterious interlude. The first, "Point/Line/Plane", takes its inspiration from the painter Vassily Kandinsky, one of the most important pioneers of 20th century abstract art. I've always loved his color palette, gestural vocabulary, and sense of form that emerges from spontaneity. I've tried to find musical analogues for these elements. In the final movement, "The Guests at the Party", I envisioned the four instruments as four people, each with their own life-course leading to the party. They progress through a series of life-stages: Birth, Infancy, Childhood, Adolescence, and Maturity. Finally, they meet at the party. I hope the piece covers a wide range of life and aesthetic experience, and leads listeners to draw surprising connections.

"Here Comes the Sun" Juneteenth LP at Joe's Pub June 19th
Here comes the sun As summer approaches and the sun shines upon us, JLP is thrilled to announce its 8th annual Juneteenth celebration concert at Joes Pub, Monday June 19th. This year they will be serving up some of your favorites along with some classical, afro-pop, gospel and classic R&B. It's the ultimate Freedom party as we celebrate Black Creativity and Black Joy. To get your tickets, visit this link and select Access Tickets or simply Click here
Juneteenth LP (Juneteenth Legacy Project) is a musical collaborative of Black classically trained musicians who are continually pushing boundaries by bringing together unexpected classical music by Black classical composers and brilliantly crafted pop arrangements for a refreshing take on the live music experience. The Juneteenth Annual Celebration event at Joe's Pub was born not only out of the desire to celebrate Freedom Day, but also to introduce audiences to the often under-represented repertoire of the Black Diaspora.
The significance of such a concert on this date is profound. On June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, Union Army General Gordon Granger stood on the balcony of the Ashton Villa and read General Order No. 3 announcing the complete emancipation of slaves as articulated in the Emancipation Proclamation. His reading of the order, buttressed by the presence of a few thousand Union soldiers, announced and guaranteed the freedom of every slave. Juneteenth is first and foremost a celebration of freedom, but in the case of this particular Juneteenth concert, it is a celebration specifically of what Black musicians did and continue to do with that freedom. We celebrate and honor the women and men from then to now, who against all odds chose a life of creativity in music by picking up a violin, a conductors baton, or a composers pen. Juneteenth LPs events always feature the music of the Black Diaspora, but also sometimes the music of other cultural traditions that speak to them; but most importantly, their events are joyful ftes.
