August 06, 2024
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Following the triumphant performance/standing ovation of hisSymphony No. 4: Juneteenth, at UCLA's Royce Hall on June 5th,Professor Emeritus Earl Louis Stewart will be heard on Homage, a new album release by renowned clarinetist, Marcus Eley. Eley recorded Stewart'sMajestic - the first movement of hisRhythm Sonata 11B, arranged for clarinet. It has been pre-released on a studio album to be available on every major streaming platform.
The album has an official release date of August 30th of this year, featuring music for clarinet, string trio, and quartet by African American composers. The album is rich with diverse styles, from spirituals to folk themes, and jazz-inspired compositions.
In Majestic, Marcus Eleys clarinet sings with weaving melodies and is elegantly complimented by four strings: two violins, viola, and violoncello. Rhythm Sonatas other two movements, Larghetto and Moderato e Animato, II and III respectively, and the first movement, Majestic, are a stylish trio of jazz fugues governed by ever-present rhythm; hence, Rhythm Sonata is a bold modern-day jazz version of the eighteenth-century Baroque trio sonata. When asked about the inspiration behind his unique and innovative composition, Stewart had this to say: the trio sonata was a good median to express jazz; The variations of figured bass (originally played by the harpsicord), were nothing more than the number of intervals that constituted a chord, which is similar to the chord-symbol technique used throughout jazz; I interpreted the medium of the trio sonata like the modernrhythm section.
Stewart developed his jazz prowess as a trumpeter at age twelve. As a teenager, he began performing with jazz notables and writing head arrangements. Soon after, he attended Southern University in New Orleans, LA, where he learned to write jazz composition under his mentor, the late jazz great Alvin Batiste. Stewart would go on to achieve a Doctor of Musical Arts at the University of Texas Austin where he studied Western classical music. He is a professor emeritus of the University of California and is one of the preeminent experts on the cultural foundations of African-American music. His compositions are represented by the American Composers Alliance.
Marcus Eley is an acclaimed clarinetist known for his dedication to showcasing diverse composers and expanding the classical music repertoire. With a career that spans decades, Eley has captivated audiences worldwide with his exceptional performances and commitment to musical excellence. Homage offers listeners a glimpse into the vibrant intricacies of American music. From the soulful rhythms of Alvin Batiste to the tender introspection of Herbert Franklin Mells, each piece honors the contributions of trailblazing composers who have left an indelible mark on the classical music landscape. This album is a celebration of the profound impact African American composers have had on the world of classical music, proclaimed Eley. Through these pieces, we aim to shine a light on their enduring legacy and inspire a deeper appreciation for their work.

Prelude to Juneteenth Day Celebration
Event Date: Wednesday, June 5, 2024 at 7:00pm
Royce Hall at UCLA
Brief note on the Symphony No. 4 Juneteenth (Identity 34:1), by Earl Louis Stewart:
This work for chorus and orchestra was written to commemorate the early 19th-century Juneteenth celebrations and is musically designed to reflect the format of those celebrations. To this extent, the work may be deemed programmatic.
Though the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln on September 22, 1862, and became effective January 1, 1863, it was not until June 19, 1865two and a half years later that the people of Texas, including 250,000 enslaved people, were informed that slavery had been abolished. This day became known as Juneteenth and is celebrated not only in Texas, but also in some form from Washington State to New York, and from Illinois to Texas.
Composer Earl Louis Stewart, on traveling from Louisiana to Texas during his college years, became aware of the (now) federal holiday, which was first recognized in Texas in 1980. Stewart also participated in activities surrounding Juneteenth celebrations as a Fulbright fellow in Ghana, and through these experiences over the years, the idea for his Symphony No. 4: Juneteenth (Identity 34:1) was born.
The composition utilizes two prominent forms of African American music in the last half of the 19th century: ragtime and spirituals.

Naxos Opera Classics will release the premiere recording of The Leopard opera this year. Composer Michael Dellaira secured rights to compose an opera based on the bookThe Leopardfollowing a trip to Sicily. He was commissioned by American Opera Projects that same year, and collaborated with the celebrated poet and librettist J. D. McClatchy, who died in 2018, just two months after the opera score was completed. In 2016, excerpts of the still incompleteThe Leopardwere performed at the Manhattan School of Music, and later that year a portion of the work was recorded by the Boston Conservatory orchestra at the Berklee College of Music.
Pandemic complications froze the entire performance world for two years, andThe Leopardonly had its world premiere in March 2022, in a run of two performances by the Frost Opera Theater at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center in Cutler Bay, Florida. Gerard Schwarz, a Distinguished Professor at the University of Miamis Frost School of Music and Artistic and Music Director of the Palm Beach Symphony, led the work with an authoritative hand.
