The
historic Laurel Leaf Award, given by ACA over the years to such
artists/entities as Martha Graham, George Szell, WBAI Radio, and the American
Composers Orchestra, will be given this year to Innova Recordings, for
its excellent support of the full range of contemporary American music.
As we honor ACA of the past, we also look forward to ACAs future as an
active publisher, promoter, and archivist for American composers. Join us for
an unforgettable evening of music, and to honor the many composers who built
one of the most important collections of American music in the world. Video
excerpts of images and memorabilia from ACAs archives will be shown throughout
the evening.
*******
In
1937, Aaron Copland and a group of composers including Otto Luening, Marion
Bauer, Henry Brant, Virgil Thomson, Elie Siegmeister, and George Antheil
established the American Composers Alliance as a unified front to raise the
professional status for American composers of the time. It grew to become a
licensing and publishing entity, handling music and collecting licensing fees for a large
contingent of active concert music composers in the United States, over several
decades. As an alternative for composers whose music did not fit the commercial
market, ACA also played a role in the formation of BMI by the
Broadcasters in the early 1940s, and established a bond with BMI that continues
to the present day.
Members of ACA, and all BMI members, contact ACA for ticket discount code.
