LIFE DANCES

orch: picc-3.3.3.3; 4.3.3.1; 5 perc; harp, pno, str

An orchestral work in 3 movements: Rain Dance, Sun Dance, Life Dance, inspired by 3 poems of Native American tribes: Papago, Tewa, and Makah, respectively. Each of the 3 movements is based musically on a different Native American melody. Each one built on a different 6-tone scale, providing the source material for the melodic and harmonic development of the movements. The orchestra is large, and utilizes an extensive percussion section. The work is technically demanding throughout, and requires advanced performers.
