FOLKSODY

FOLKSODY

violin, cello, piano

A piano trio which is based entirely on selected traditional American ballads, folk songs, and fiddle tunes. The intent here was not merely simple quotation, but rather an expansion, development, transformation, and fusion of their melodic and rhythmic elements, supported by a harmonic language based on their respective modes. A "paean" to traditional American music. Very difficult -advanced performers only. Written with support of a Creative Activities Fellowship, Western Michigan University.

Movements: 3.0

Authored (or revised): 1990

First performance: February 1991 - Members of the Fontana Ensemble with pianist Ralph Votapek, Kalamazoo, MI.
