Trepak (Shake, Rattle and Roll)

Trepak (Shake, Rattle and Roll)

bassoon, tuba, double bass

From Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker, Trépak is arranged for bassoon, tuba, and double bass trio. Trepak is one of the character dances from the well-known 1892 ballet, The Nutcracker. It is based on the traditional Russian and Ukrainian folk dance also called the trepak.

Tchaikovsky pulled eight favorite numbers from his upcoming ballet score in early 1892 to form The Nutcracker Suite before the stage production even premiered. Trepak is featured as the lively sixth movement (or second-to-last dance) in this orchestral suite.
In the full ballet, Trepak is part of the Divertissement in Act II, serving as the energetic Russian Dance alongside other national character dances. Inspired by fast traditional Ukrainian and Russian folk hopak/trepak dances, it features a breakneck molto vivace tempo, heavy tambourine accents, and explosive physical choreography on stage.
