Christmas Sweets, Op. 22
Christmas Sweets, Op. 22
Solo Piano
Christmas Sweets is an interpolation of a set of traditional hymns (primarily German), including Ihr Kinderlein, kommet (Oh, Come, Little Children); In the bleak midwinter; Es ist ein Blum entsprungen (Lo, how a rose e'er blooming); and Brich an, o schoenes Morgenlicht (Break forth o beauteous heavenly light). Using the hymns as background, these pieces evoke the excitement, comfort, and joy of Christmas.
"Children's Presence" begins with the children running down the steps to find their gifts. As they begin to open them, their excitement grows with each surprise.
"Family Presence" opens in a family room just after Christmas dinner. The family relaxes around a glowing fire enjoying each other's company. All of a sudden one of the children notices it is snowing. They run to the window, enjoying the snow from their cozy home.
"Joyful Presence" captures the majesty of Christmas and the shared joy of a church service. The shifting sound progressions echo the brilliance of shifting light through stained glass windows. The children's excitement and family togetherness are reflected in this jovial culmination of the Christmas experience.
