Violin, Viola, and Double Bass

Composer's Note:

This piece was written shortly after I had received a performance of a 1985 trio with the same instrumentation. I think I not only had the instrumentation in my ear, I felt there were things in the previous piece left unsaid. This piece could certainly be considered an afterthought, but it has a totally different approach. I was composing at the time using a rather severe process and wanted a little space.

This piece is certainly more more episodic than I had been writing at the time, and covered more expressive ground. I don’t think I had any specific thing in mind in writing the piece, and there was no specific performance either It was just sort of off the cuff, as I needed a breath of fresh air.

The work is only one isolated movement, and lasts about eight minutes.
