Spun Glass
Spun Glass
Soprano and Piano
Composer's Note:
Spun Glass is a group of two songs for voice and piano on poems by Marianne Moore. Both were early poems that have remained among her best known work. The Fish observes the vastness of oceans where life and death exist simultaneously and the sea grows old in a changing landscape. The title Spun Glass is from a line from this poem that tells of barnacles who “… cannot hide there for the submerged shafts of the sun, split like spun glass.” A Jelly-Fish begins with the text “Visible, Invisible, A fluctuating charm,” and it continues to explore the line between illusion and reality. Spun Glass is dedicated to soprano Tyler Cassidy-Heacock.
