Three Scenes from "The Heartland" was commissioned by and is dedicated to Donald Pirone. The title refers to the poem "The Heartland" by Amy Clampitt, who the composer met in 1986 when they were both residency fellows at the Yaddo Corporation (Artists Colony) in Saratoga Springs, NY. The music evokes a natural world of wonder and mystery.
