Composer's note: "Wakings (1986) emerges from a compositional struggle between repetition of a harmonic idee fixe and a world of improvisation, fantasy and blurred structural lines. Perhaps it takes its distant historical cue from the Baroque passacaglia. The work was written for the Society for New Music on a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts."
