Avanti! was written to celebrate the brilliant career of saxophonist, Frederick L. Hemke, upon his retirement after 50 years from Northwestern University. C C# E F F# G G#, the only pitches used in the work, are derived from Hemke's name, and are the basis of both the melodic and harmonic material.
