Composer's Note:
Coiled (2023) is a virtuosic work for solo piano written around the idea of musical material which is formed and performed as if coiled like a spool of wire or rope. The scaler material comes from two penta-chords with two redundant notes. These two chord spiral outwards from a central pitch in differing sequences of notes. When combined the two chords form a non-symmetrical octatonic scale that has a grouping of five whole steps and 5 half steps (again sharing two notes). But, that is not the point of the work, merely a launching point to derive the melodic and harmonic world in which the composer played in this maniacal musical playground.
