Winner of the 1962 Tanglewood Orchestra Prize (Raphael Sagalyn Award), Four Movements for Chamber Orchestra is a 12-tone work written while Rhodes was under the tutelage of Prof. Iain Hamilton both at Duke University (NC) and at the Tanglewood Music Center. The piece was premiered by the Tanglewood Festival Orchestra in 1962. His first of two Raphael Sagalyn Award wins, the work garnered Rhodes (at the time only 22 years of age) recognition in an article in the New York Times about the Tanglewood season that year.
