Written for the middle school band of the composer’s son, Cosmic Fantasies is a work intended for younger bands. During the time period of its writing, many of the students were absorbed in a fantastic and complex game which was generically known as "Dungeons and Dragons.” It was also during the period of Star Wars film culture dramatizing the struggle between "good" and "evil" on a galactic scale. Within this environment, the programmatic nature of this piece found its inspiration. Players speak words in rhythm pertaining to fantasy demons and spirits in the fourth movement.
