Points and Tales

Piano

Composer's Note

Snapshot is the first piece in Points and Tales. Like Night River it includes a descending line, as do many of the movements in Points and Tales.

Hello - A Telephone conversation. Caller calls and without a greeting starts chattering loudly in single line music. Receiver eventually gets a chance to say Hello, softly in chords. This continues for a bit; then two then join in and go skating off in an equal conversation Mode.

Ceaseless Mantras contains fleeting quotes from popular music: Falling in love with love, Meet George Jetson, The Sea, So What, and The Way You Look Tonight. It also includes music I wrote to compliment it.

#Nocturne is evocative of night and uses very tight harmonies, i.e., clusters.

One Self Eemage: Let’s rename this “The End of a Very Bad Day.” A poor temper is on display A few attempts to humor it fall short and it reverts to the dark side.

Canto: a gentle song.

Desert Tango: Some traditional Tango elements are heard but the piece is composed in mind of what happens when the Tango has been in the desert sun for years.

Night River Intends to portray a foggy river at night.

Go is a "parapraise" of early piano rock. Maybe think of Jerry Lee Lewis or Little Richard.

From One Illusion to Another is a series of mirages. As soon as we think we have arrived we go on to the next point. The end of this contemplative piece is secure, however.

Scherzolino: The title refers to the nature of the piece, a bit joking, not its length which is a bit on the long side. It’s a virtuosic work influenced by Scarlatti.

Vanished is the last piece in Points and Tales. It’s meant to let the cycle rest. The downward moving figure that starts the piece is revisited several times. It vanishes and is replaced at the end by slower descending figure.
