Composer's Note:
The 1989 original and 2021 revised versions of "Radical Ears" are a study in contrasts. In the 1989 score the instruments blend into each other at a relatively soft dynamic level throughout. The addition of contrasting louder dynamics and a greater dynamic range, in the revised score, results in a piece that is decidedly different in character from the original score, less atmospheric and more dramatic. The addition of percussion (timpani, castanet and snare drum) to the instrumental ensemble, in the revised score, also provides further instrumental contrast and drama and sets the rest of the ensemble into relief.
