Composer's Note:

Once, in Early Spring is inspired by the first warmth after winter. The sparse opening chords in the piano are slowly warmed: first by the entrance of the horn, then by the ray of sunshine that is the flute. The promise of spring rises and then falls, in a storm of flourishes and melodic figures.
