Percussion Quartet
Composer's Note:
ON TIME seeks to honor the life and visionary work of Japanese artist On Kawara in both literal and abstract ways. Commissioned by Westwood Percussion, the piece is divided into three sections:
I. TIME WARP explores the way musicians experience time--in terms of beat units, warping expectations through constantly shifting meters.
II. STASIS explores stopped time, and the randomized activity experienced within it, where old memories and bits of forgotten tunes twist calmy on the air, as if shaken within a snow globe.
III. TIMESTRUCT ends the work, beginning with musically ciphered version of specific dates and culminating in a more metrically-structured version of what came before.
