Ode to the Mechanic, for mezzo-soprano (or baritone) and piano, is a short musical setting of a quintessential queer experience - taking one's car to the auto shop to see the mechanic - touching on themes of longing and masculinity. The music by Lee Gannon, heavily based in quintal harmonies, begins and ends with a "jazzy and sly" theme full of lowered or raised fifths, bookending a lush middle section with stacked perfect fifths.
