Double is written after the manner of a Jeu partie (also called partimen or tenzone), poetic forms of the High Middle Ages consisting of two or three sections: the first section consisted of a poem professing a particular viewpoint on a courtly (secular) subject; the second section usually presented an opposing or at least contrasting viewpoint.
