Piano
Editor's Note:
Richard Moryl's particles is an evolving moto-perpetuo-esque pattern of high, quick sounds on the piano, and part of a series of particle pieces Moryl created (for solo flute; solo cello or bass; and for orchestra). Violent, loud, and not really conceived of in those terms; more accurate is the aural equivalent of extremely bright and numerous sparks in instrumental timbres.
Graphic notation can be divided into more decorative (example: the box) and more functional (altered note heads), but the divide is loose; the solid line of the box might be said to relate closely to the cluster notation used, describing uninterrupted loud sound that is interfered with by the surrounding large particles (stave pairs) and small particles (notes).
