Composer's Note:
The products of my compositional career have featured electronic sound more often than not, with more than a decade passing at one point between the composition of music solely for acoustic instruments. Figure and Ground 1 is an act of translation, from my digital practice to a purely acoustic medium. This began with a long reflection on what sonic elements characterize almost four decades of my music. The list is not terribly long, but this project has taught me many things, among them is the extent to which my electronic music has been deeply informed by my acoustic music techniques and interests. There simply isn't nearly as much a distinction as I expected to find when I set out. Figure and Ground 1 is the first of an as yet unrealized collection of works for chamber orchestra intended to be performed as a whole, without interruption. This activity is made possible through a grant from the Central Minnesota Arts Board, thanks to funds provided by the McKnight Foundation.
Double bassists are required to have a C extension.
