Coincident Episode 4

Coincident Episode 4

Open Instrumentation 4 Parts

Composer's Note:

Graphic scores became a new and essential part of my musiking practice in 2020, in tandem with the need to make music over the internet, telematically. Creating visual structures that are at once quite specific in their presentation of relationships but also quite open to interpre- tation provided a way to create music with as broad a range of musicians as I could connect with (literally!) while socially distanced. Regardless of instrument or musical style, wonder- ful musicians such as Zeitgeist have been tremendous musical collaborators in this approach to musiking that values flexibility in a slightly asynchronous environment, that challenges the musician as listener, and exchanges some degree of precision with an equal amount of trust. This approach to notation has enabled me to access a performer's creative collaboration in a way that traditional notation does not, and consequently, music I would not otherwise make.
COINCIDENT Episode 4 is one of several episodes in the larger work, COINCIDENT, a telematic, multi-episode, audiovisual collaboration with Zeitgeist and several artists from various other disciplines. It was commissioned by Zeitgeist as part of DECADE FIVE, a set of major new works Zeitgeist is commissioning and presenting throughout its fifth decade.
