Composer's Note:

I wrote Lossmusic more than thirty years ago, first as a piano piece and a couple of years later in a version for strings with piccolo, clarinet, and piano.

The piece comes from a time when I experienced the loss of of a person and situation that I found very difficult. Since then, I—and we—have experienced many more such times. So I see this short piece as an observation of and meditation on grief. Though in a small dose, I think you’ll notice that it contains quite a bit of harmonic roughness and textural grit and dirt.
