We, as musicians discovering new pieces of music, investigate their many sides, find their edges, wrestle with the nature of their substance. This piece, if it is ‘about’ something, concerns itself with this apparently unceasing process of searching and finding at the keyboard—or maybe just searching and searching more. Composed for pianist May Phang, I attempted to imagine every in-progress phrase as if she were forging it.
