Composer's Note:

Langkawi Overture was commissioned by Matthew LaRocca, director of the Champlain Philharmonic Orchestra.The opening strains are taken from Langkawi Fanfare and developed into threads which weave together to tell legends and stories relating to Langkawi Island in Malaysia. Embedded within are the waves and storms surrounding a forbidden love. A fanfare announces the arrival of heroes and the formation of the land. Passion and yearning are in abundance and written into the counterpoint of colors and modalities both Far Eastern and Western, a fusion of gamelan and classical harmonies.
