Composer's Note:

Labyrinth is a work in three contrasting, yet interrelated movements. Although some reference to the myth of Theseus is made, for the most part the work symbolizes an abstract journey with many sinuous turns.

I. “The Sacred Forest” makes reference to the sacred grove that surrounded Knossos in ancient times. The music makes reference to the mysterious rituals that took place there, depicted in artwork painted on the walls of the palace of Minos. Towards the end of the movement a chorus of magical birds sings forth from the forest. 

II. “Agon” is an elaborate fugue. The high point of the work is a massive stretto that superimposes all the important thematic materials of the piece, ending with the subject played by the timpani. The title refers to the Greek concept of a heroic struggle or contest.

III. “Flight” is a highly rhythmic and dramatic finale. Does the title refer to an escape (as in the Theseus myth) or a depiction of flying? Both.
