Mirrors

Mirrors

Piano

Composer's Note:

In Mirrors, there are always two lines in counterpoint with themselves and other notes in the immediate context, and the lines are always related by inversion. Unlike other pieces, where inversions are always duplicated both registrally and rhythmically, in this work the registrations and rhythms are different. This piece is a complicated type of 21st-century counterpoint.
In the first movement, all the lines are of four notes, or tetrachords. Sometimes the mirroring takes place entirely within one measure and sometimes it is over two.
The second movement is again based on tetrachords, except that one note is added to each of them in a different octave, creating pentachords. The mirrors exist between both the tetrachords and pentachords. The notes articulated in each measure are also related by inversion, but these are usually not the same as those in the melodic lines.
The piece was started when I was visiting Rome in October of 2022, but continued long after I returned and completed only in 2023.
