Composer's Note:
These etudes are basically performance composition exercises that I am writing to develop my technique further. I began them in the summer of 2018 and finished this edition in the summer of 2019 while on retreat in New Mexico. In the etudes written thus far I explored a concept of "abstract realism" in which I use more conventional sounding gestures or material in abstract and fragmented ways, with or without any sort of arc, resolution, or completed phrases.
Movements: 1. Line with rhythmic fragments 2. Arpeggiated patterns with a chord progression 3. Rhapsodic lines 4. Repeated notes and fragments with pentatonic melodies 5. Fragmented chord progression, fragmented melody 6. Rhythmic pattern with melodic fragments
