Composer's Note:
Dream Carver (El tallador de sueños), written by Diana Cohn includes a bilingual narration in Spanish and English. The story is told between sections of music: Manuel and his father carve small wooden animals the family sells at the fiestas in Oaxaca. But Manuel wants to carve much larger, colorful animals. When he tells his father how he longs to bring these animals to life, his father only scowls. But Manuel perseveres, and realizes his dream of carving fantastical, vibrant jaguars, quetzals, and more...
Artist residencies took place at Moreland Arts Magnet School where children created their own dream animals and learned traditional Latin dances inspired by the story; their participation was included in the performance.
