Dark Winter

Dark Winter

Mezzo-soprano, Cello, and Piano

Composer's Note:

The text for this song, Jeri Theriault’s poem “Dark Winter,” was inspired by Gideon Bok’s painting of the same name, depicting a dark loft-like studio space high above the city, drenched in deep blue, both inviting and vaguely menacing. Theriault imagines a couple on the verge of divorce, drawn in desperation to Bok’s room: “we swore this place would save us.” The musical setting bathes the words in harmonic resonance, echoes, hints of water drops.
