Composer's Note:
Dangerous Journeys is a work for orchestra in three movements and represents my latest approach to orchestral writing and the use of dramatic narrative.
I. White Water: The opening movement describes a small craft careening down a torrential river, encountering hazards and dangerous rough water as it goes. In the end it disappears beyond view and we have no idea if it has survived the journey or not.
II. Among the Ruins the Nightingale Sings: The second movement of the work is dedicated to the heroic people of Ukraine and their struggle for existence against the brutal forces arrayed against them. The nightingale, that most eloquent singer, is a native species of Ukraine, and I have referred to it in the title as symbolic of the Ukrainian people’s resilience in the face of murderous adversity. Towards the end of the movement fantastic birds sing out courageously on their behalf.
III. Soaring: The final movement of Dangerous Journeys is based on a single, lively theme which is cast in continuously transforming settings. The music is filled with a spirited energy, ending with overwhelming force.
Movements: I. White Water II. Among the Ruins the Nightingale Sings (to the heroic people of Ukraine) III. Soaring
