Composer's Note;
Creature exists in a few different forms. The 113 Twin Cities New Music Festival commissioned a work for saxophonist Kyle Hutchins and the Twin Cities’ O.G. new music ensemble, Zeitgeist. Discussions led to the following conditions: it include electronic sound, contain movements allowing for future performances by saxophone and piano or solo saxophone, and include movements with open instrumentation and a duration anywhere from 6 to 60 minutes. The result premiered by Kyle and Zeitgeist is a 4 movement work, the two outer movements for saxophone, piano, and electronics, the inner movements for saxophone, piano, open ensemble, and electronics. Another version for saxophone, piano, and electronics and includes a solo saxophone version of movement 2. And the version for saxophone, open ensemble of 4–7 performers, and electronics features the movements Background Radiation and Metamorphosis as a performable unit with a duration up to 60 minutes.
