Continuum (Postscript '97)
Alto Saxophone and Piano
Composer's Note:
Continuum (Postscript ’97) is a brief but virtuosic study in perpetual motion. The lines of the alto saxophone and piano continuously swirl and intertwine in a joyous tour de force.” (From the liner notes, VISIONS IN METAPHOR)
Continuum (Postscript ’97) is one of several interchangeable pieces called POSTCARDS FROM AMERICA that highlight the unique musical languages, styles and genres of seven composers (John Adams, Samuel Adler, William Albright, Milton Babbitt, Karel Husa, Pauline Oliveros and Marilyn Shrude). John Sampen and Marilyn Shrude commissioned all the works, and premiered the complete set at the 11th World Saxophone Congress in Valencia, Spain (1997).
Sampen and Shrude recorded POSTCARDS FROM AMERICA on the compact disc VISIONS IN METAPHOR—Albany Records (2001), Troy 442. Recordings of Continuum (Postscript ’97) were subsequently made by friends of the composer: Richard Ingham and Mary McCarthy, SCENES FROM A MOUNTAIN—Fox Glove Records (2002), FOX086CD; Carrie Kofmann and Margreet Francis, CARILLON SKY—Impermanence Records (2011), IMP 13.
