Come Live with Me

Come Live with Me

Soprano and Melody Instrument

Come Live with Me is a setting of verses from Christopher Marlowe’s A Passionate Shepherd to His Love, drawn from the anthology The Passionate Pilgrim, published in 1599. The only variant is the addition of the word ‘come’ at the start, characteristic of later editions. The text inspired a lyrical melody with a yearning quality and a countermelody that gently circles and at key points meets the other. Originally scored for soprano and English horn, performers’ requests led to additional options. There are now instrumental pairings also available for alto flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, violin, viola and cello. Come Live with Me has been performed at weddings and in concert venues, equally at home in both.
