Composer's Note:
“Christmas Sweets” Opus 22a is an interpolation of a set of traditional hymns, primarily German, including “Ihr Kinderlein, kommet” (“Oh, Come, Little Children”); “In the Bleak Midwinter”; “Es ist ein Blum entsprungen” (Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming”); and “Brich an, o schönes Morgenlicht” (“Break Forth O Beauteous Heavenly Light”). With the hymns as background, each movement evokes the excitement, comfort, and joy of Christmas.
“Children’s Presence” begins with children running down the stairs on Christmas morning eager to open the gifts awaiting them. Excitement builds as they open one after the other, glee showing on their faces with each surprise.
“Family Presence” is set in a family room just after Christmas dinner. Parents and children relax around a glowing fire, enjoying each other’s company. Suddenly one child sees snow falling outside. All run to the window, taking in the winter scene from inside their cozy home.
“Joyful Presence” captures the majesty of Christmas and the shared joy of a church service. Shifting sound progressions mirror the brilliance of shifting light as it streams through stained glass windows. In this final movement, the children’s excitement and family togetherness meld in a jovial culmination of the Christmas experience.
