Composer's note: Piano Variations was begun on the Isle of Nantucket in the summer of 1981 and completed in Brookline, MA in the winter of 1982. The composition was composed for and is dedicated to Thomas Stumpf, who gave the first performance on Sunday, April 11, 1982 in Jordan Hall at the New England Conservatory. The form is a series of twenty variations on the opening theme. As the variations on proceed the groupings and allusions to past variations come clear. The score is published by American Composers Alliance.
