The actual "Villa of the Mysteries" is located in the ruins of Pompeii, and contains some of the best-preserved frescoes of the Roman era, depicting rites of an exotic cult, probably of blend of Bacchic and Egyptian influences. The Villa of this work is far more "virtual", an imaginary structure made up first of a series of intimate rooms ("The Secret Apartments") where suprising events occur, wondrous sights appear, and the senses are celebrated. This is followed by "The Big Room", a space whose very amplitude suggests a far more spiritual realm, and is conducive to contemplation of the eternal and ethereal. As such, this musical architecture suggests the essential cohabitation of the flesh and the spirit, the exterior and interior, the ephemeral and the timeless. --Robert Carl
