HONORS FOR HIS NAME: A Celebration of Praises

Organ

Program Note from the composer:

Asked to write a large work consistent with the subject of Praise, I conceived of a multiple-movement structure using a number of hymn tunes. Rather than stating these as a series of chorale preludes or as a succession of original versions, I have sought the exuberance of praise by dancing around the tunes; only two are given complete statement in the traditional sense. In addition, I wanted to encompass the range of feelings which the idea of Praise brings into my mind and heart. The five movements do that.

Movements: 1. Energetic, on Oliver Holden's "Coronation" (1792) - [2:45] 2. Forceful, on Michael Hayden's "Lyons" (1813) - [1:30] 3. Hushed, on "Kentucky Harmony" (1816) - [2:00] 4. Joyful, on Henry T. Smart's "Regent Square" (1867), Joseph Barnby's "Laudes Domini" (1868), and William Billings' "Rochester" (1794) - [1:45] 5. Triumphant, on William Billings' "St. Andrew's" (1794) - [4:00]
