This work was composed in 1982, after the composer had won the George Eastman Prize for his Duo for Bassoon & Piano. The work is structured in five continuous parts; the first and fifth solemn and introspective, the second and fourth active and rhythmic. The third-marked quasi-recitativo-is based on interactions between the bassoon and the strings. The work was first performed by David Van Hoesen and the Eastman Philharmonic, David Effron, conductor, February 10, 1989.
