Red Sun

Red Sun

flute, oboe, tenor saxophone, 2 horns, trumpet in C, timpani, and mixed chorus

Composer's note: This music was inspired by my visit to the temple ruins of Soleb, on the banks of the Nile in Northern Sudan in 1997. As the crimson red sun was setting on the western horizon, draping the ancient stones and pillars in a warm golden light, I imagined a chorus of worshippers singing to the fading holy orb, their source of energy and life. Allowing my mind to melt into oneness with the memories locked within the stones all around me, I could hear large kettle drums, horns, trumpets, flutes and reed pipes supporting the impassioned chorus. I carried that memory with me, back home to America, where years later this music was composed and recorded.

Melody is sung as vocalise non-text.
