Blue Star
Blue Star
flute, string orchestra
With the setting of the sun, the stars begin to come out. The brightest star of the night sky is the bluish star, Sirius, mythical home of many of the ancient Egyptian gods and goddesses. "Blue Star" is a musical ode to Sirius, and especially to the goddess Isis in her aspect as healer as worshipped on the sacred island of Philae. It is performed as a structured improvisation using a scale designed to open a musical "stargate" between Sirius and the listener. The flautist improvises on the notes of this scale as each of the string players alternates at their own chosen pace between two notes that they have been independently assigned. Simultaneously, two vocalists perform overtone chanting centered on the tonic of the scale.
