Composer's Note:
This set of short, unpretentious pieces encompasses a variety of styles. (I) is an ABA structure with call and response patterns; (II) is an “ostinato machine” as one finds in Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring”; (III) is a variation on the Macedonian folk melody, “Shto Mi e Milo”; (IV) is a changing set of rhythmic patterns over and under an ostinato, reminiscent of Conlan Nancarrow; (V) is a “three voice Quodlibet” based on three Slovak folk themes: “Šarkezy” – “A ja taka dzivočka” – “Ej, padá, padá rosička”; (VI) an “almost waltz” in 7/4 time; (VII) a short dance using Bulgarian rhythms.
