a silver blue moon

Jazz Combo and String Quartet Clarinet, Flugelhorn, Piano, Drum Set, Bass With 2 Violins, Viola, and Cello

Composer's Note:

A set of three related but independent pieces, a silver blue moon, a touch of grey for sadness, and to the sunrise in the valley of brambles, were commissioned by the chamber music organization Musical Offerings for the annual Jazz Meets Classical series in San Antonio, and premiered at the Betty Kelso Pavilion at the San Antonio Botanical Gardens on June 1, 2025, and June 3, 2025 at the Ao5 Gallery at the Arboretum in Austin. The program featured music by Bela Bartok, and the commission suggested that references to his influence be incorporated into this new work. Movement 2 includes short musical quotes of thematic and harmonic material from his music, which the composer gratefully acknowledges in honor of Bela Bartok.
