The African American Art Song Alliance - 20th Anniversary Year - convention at the University of California in Irvine on February 9-12, 2017. Who/What:
H. Leslie Adams, Adolphus Hailstork, Anthony Davis, and others, among numerous internationally acclaimed singers, pianists, and scholars in presentations of lectures, panel discussions, poster presentations, master classes, and live performances.
On Friday 2/10/2017 9:00 a.m. The Adams-Owens Prize will be presented to composers Dorothy Rudd Moore and Shaun Okpebholo. Adams is on hand to personally make comments regarding the importance of art song composition and to share his own motivation for working in this genre.The Adams-Owens Prize is named for two giants of African American Art Song composition, H. Leslie Adams and Robert Owens. Recipients are acknowledged as having achieved a high level of distinctinion particularly in art song, spirituals, oratorio, and/or opera.
The same day at 6:00 p.m. composer H. Leslie Adams will conduct a Master Class on four of his art songs: "Midas, Poor Midas," "Love Response," "Prayer" and "Lullaby Eternal." Performers for this class are from the UCI voice department. Adams' "Love Rejoices" is featured on another program during the convention.
Among the notable attendees at this convention are Vocalists George Shirley and Willis Patterson, and Composers Julia Perry, Adolphus Hailstork and George Walker, the last represented by his son Gregory Walker, and others, among numerous internationally acclaimed singers, pianists, and scholars in presentations of lectures, panel discussions, poster presentations, master classes, and performances.
