Composer's Note:
Night Pageantry was composed for bassoonist Rachael Elliott who gave the premiere performance.The form is episodic, unfolding a series of contrasted sections, none of which is ever repeated exactly.To me the music suggests an after-dark promenade along the midway of a country fair, past varied andcolorful exhibits; some gaudy and brightly illuminated, some ironic, even humorous, and others moreserious and dramatic in nature. All immersed in semi-darkness.
