Composer's Note:
The title of this work is borrowed from a cartoon by painter Ad Reinhardt that reflects one of my core artistic beliefs - namely, that the audience for a piece of abstract art should be prepared to suspend their preconceptions and meet the artist halfway if they expect to engage with the work on a deep level. Additionally, it reflects the ideal relationship between the musicians and the improvising actors around whom the piece is designed - the actors should respond to the music in real time without having heard it before, necessitating an open-minded and collaborative approach. You, sir, are a space, too was written for ICEBERG New Music and was premiered in May 2023 by DECODA with Louis Kornfeld and Rick Andrews.
