Composer's Note:
The Ubi Caritas is one of a pair of a cappella choral works I composed in the fall of 2019 for my friend Chris Jackson and the Chamber Choir at Muhlenberg College. The main musical materials are comprised primarily of a section cut from a piece commissioned by Iowa State University, and which uses the incipit of the ISU alma mater as a source for imitative counterpoint. I chose portions of the Catholic text which have a more universal message, and which felt most resonant to me personally.
Unfortunately the premiere of the choral version was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so I was very pleased to be able to make this brass ensemble transcription for some good friends from around the country.
