Emily Dickinson (1830-86)The acclaimed duo of Sarah Pelletier, soprano, and pianist Lois Shapiro will celebrate the poetry of Emily Dickinson in
a recital of modern song settings including Aaron
Copland's "Twelve Poems of Emily Dickinson," a world premiere from
Brandeis Department of Music chair Yu-Hui Chang, as well as new
Dickinson cycles by Ross Bauer (The Waters Wrecked the Sky) and Eric Sawyer. Location: Slosberg Music Center at Brandeis University in Waltham, MA. This follows a symposium performace given at Wellesley College last year.
The Bauer work, The
Waters Wrecked the Sky, sets five poems offering a sometimes
terrifying, sometimes awe-struck experience of the forces of nature.
Sawyers cycle, Jehovahs Watch, draws on six poems connected to time
and disruptions of times rhythms. Combined with the familiar Copland
cycle, the program offers a broad perspective of modern musical
approaches to Dickinsons poetry.
